In February 2024, the volume of sales in trade increased by 1.6% over a month, following a drop of 0.7% in January.

In February 2024, the volume of sales grew in the three main trade sectors

In February 2024, the volume of sales bounced back markedly in the wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.9% after ‑0.4%). This rebound was mainly due to the “other specialised wholesale” (fuels, wood, chemical products, etc.: +2.9% after ‑1.1%), the information and communication equipment (+7.5% after +1.2%) and the agricultural raw materials and live animals (+7.1% after ‑3.6%).

The volume of sales also recovered in February 2024 in the wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+3.0% after ‑4.8%), especially in the sale of motor vehicles (+3.7% after ‑7.0%).

Lastly, the volume of sales slowed down in February 2024 in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.4% after +1.0%), particularly in specialised stores (+0.7% after +1.3%). It sped up in the retail trade not in stores (+0.8% after +0.1%) and decreased slightly in non specialised stores (‑0.2% after +0.7%). Within specialised stores, the volume of sales grew again for the “other goods” (pharmaceutical products, clothing, footwear, etc.: +0.7% after +1.8%) and bounced back markedly for the food, beverages and tobacco (+2.3% after ‑0.7%).

Early retail trade estimate for March 2024

According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to have increased again in March 2024 (+1.1% over a month). Over the first quarter of 2024, it would be 1.0% higher than in the first quarter of 2023.

From December 2023 to February 2024, the volume of sales increased by 0.8% compared to the same three months a year before

The volume of sales of the three months under review (December 2023 to February 2024) in overall trade was 0.8% higher than that of the same period a year earlier. This growth was more marked in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+4.9%) than in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.3%). The volume of sales was stable in wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (0.0%). Within retail trade, the volume of sales increased both in specialised stores (+0.7%) and in retail trade not in stores (+0.5%), while it decreased in non-specialised stores (‑0.5%).

Revisions

The monthly percentage change in the overall sales volume trade in January 2024 is unchanged at ‑0.7% (after rounding) compared to the previous release.
